Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership
Miami, Florida

Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership focuses on strengthening families and individuals through youth education and parent training. The Too Smart To Start team will focus on students attending two South Miami magnet schools for children gifted in the arts. The 9- to 13-year-old students and their parents will be offered a series of activities that integrate the students’ artistic and academic interests into the Too Smart To Start initiative.

Activities for students will include interactive school assemblies that feature skits illustrating the harms of underage alcohol use and school-sponsored art and writing contests. As an added incentive to participants, and as an awareness-raising activity for the greater community, winning contest entries will be broadcast on closed circuit TV and displayed at a local art gallery.

The Florida team plans to offer parents a series of classes that highlight the harms of underage alcohol use and present strategies on improving parent-child communication. Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership will send parents a monthly newsletter and submit relevant articles to local and regional newspapers as well.

The Florida team.
